Canada’s Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative

The Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative (SBCCI) is a federal grants and contributions program established in 2019 with several key objectives. It aims to celebrate and share the contributions of people of African descent in Canada, while also building capacity within vibrant Black communities across the country. SBCCI provides funding to help Black-led organizations build foundational infrastructure within Black communities, supporting long-term growth and empowerment.

Capacity building
The Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative (SBCCI) includes investments aimed at strengthening and improving the capacity of Black-led and Black-serving organizations. To support smaller Black-led and Black-serving, Black-focused community-based not-for-profit organizations, the SBCCI has partnered with four key organizations:

  • Tropicana Community Services in Toronto
  • Black Business Initiative in Halifax
  • Groupe 3737 in Montreal
  • Africa Centre in Edmonton.

These Black-led national funders provide grants to support capacity building in community-based organizations and also fund capital projects, such as purchasing work-related equipment and renovating or retrofitting existing community and workspaces. Black-led and Black-serving organizations are encouraged to reach out to the national funder in their region and consult the SBCCI website for more information on funded projects.
