Black Canadian entertainers have made remarkable contributions to film, television, music, and theatre both in Canada and around the world. Some notable Black Canadian entertainers include:

Aubrey Drake Graham, known professionally as Drake, is a Canadian rapper, singer, and actor. As an influential figure in popular music, Drake has been credited with popularizing R&B sensibilities in hip hop, significantly impacting the genre’s evolution. He first gained recognition as an actor on the teen drama series “Degrassi: The Next Generation” before rising to prominence as a rapper and singer with his debut studio album “Thank Me Later” in 2010. His blend of introspective lyrics and melodic hooks has earned him numerous awards and a massive global following.

Keshia Chanté – Renowned for her multifaceted career, Keshia Chanté is a Canadian singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality. He also plays Uncle Phil in the reboot “Bel-Air” and Robert April in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” Holmes’s performances showcase his depth and adaptability, making him a standout talent in the entertainment industry.

Vinessa Antoine is a Canadian actress celebrated for her dynamic performances across a range of television series. She is prominently recognized for her portrayal of Judith Winters in the CBC comedy-drama series “Being Erica,” where her talent for both comedy and drama shone through. In 2020, Vinessa received the Nova Scotia Screen Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Lead or Featured Female Role for her work on “Diggstown.”

Sidney Poitier, though Bahamian-American, spent significant time in Canada and profoundly influenced Canadian actors. Poitier, renowned for his groundbreaking roles in Hollywood, often visited and worked in Canada throughout his illustrious career. His pioneering achievements as the first Black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, along with his commitment to portraying dignified and complex characters, have inspired many Canadian actors. Shamier Anderson,  known for his roles in “Wynonna Earp” and “Goliath,” Shamier Anderson is a rising Black Canadian actor. Anderson’s work in both series highlights his versatility and dedication to his craft. 

Stephan James is a Black Canadian actor known for his powerful performances and skill in playing a variety of characters. He became famous for his roles in “Race,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and the Amazon series “Homecoming.” These projects have made him a notable name in both Canadian and international film. He also appeared in Season 1 of “Surface,” highlighting his versatility and talent.

Eli Goree, Known for portraying Muhammad Ali in “One Night in Miami” and his role in “Riverdale,” Eli Goree is a talented Black Canadian actor whose performances have garnered widespread acclaim. Tamara Taylor is a Canadian actress. She appeared in the role of Dr. Camille Saroyan, head of the Forensic Division, in the forensic crime drama Bones. She also appeared in season seven of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., in which she played Sibyl, one of the two main antagonists.

Rachel Luttrell is a Tanzanian-Canadian-American actress renowned for her role as Teyla Emmagan, an Athosian warrior leader, on the sci-fi television series “Stargate Atlantis.” Her portrayal of Teyla Emmagan made her a beloved figure in the sci-fi community, showcasing her ability to bring strength, depth, and nuance to the character.
